BALTIMORE, Md. -- Using career lows from sophomore Brent Ito (67, -3) and freshman Henry Spring (69, -1), the University of Michigan men's golf team tied its season low with a 278 (-2) second-round total to move up two spots into sixth after 36 holes of the Big Ten Championships being played at Baltimore Country Club.
"Brent and Henry really gave us a boost today," said U-M head coach Chris Whitten. "Henry had a few bad breaks to end, otherwise both guys were fantastic all day. I was glad to see Nick (Carlson) make a good comeback, and Charlie (Pilon) was steady all day again. We will need something special tomorrow, but with the way the guys are hitting the ball, that type of round is out there."
After opening yesterday with a 291 total, the Wolverines responded on the second day of the conference tournament. In addition to Ito and Spring's career bests, junior Nick Carlson and freshman Charlie Pilon each shot 71 as the Wolverines nearly doubled their red numbers with 15 birdies after recording nine the day prior.
The story of the round was Ito's career-best 67. Using four birdies, 13 pars and one bogey, he dropped 10 shots from his first-day score and moving up 26 spots to a tie for 30th with a 144 total (77-67). With a team-best five birdies, Spring was on a four-under pace before a triple bogey on his second to last hole elevated him to a 69, a career best. With that tally, he moved into a tie for 13th at 141 (72-69).
After pacing the Wolverines with his career-best 67 in his opening round, first-day co-leader Pilon followed with a 71 and is tied for eighth at 138 (-2) after 36 holes. Hampered by a sore shoulder the last month, Carlson rallied from an opening 79 with a 71 in the second and is tied for 53rd at 150 along with senior Kyle Mueller (75-75).
The Wolverines, who are just a shot out of a top-five finish, are scheduled to play with Penn State and Northwestern for the final round off the first tee at 8 a.m.
