ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- Senior forward Tony Calderone of the University of Michigan ice hockey program has signed an entry-level contract with the NHL's Dallas Stars, the club announced today (Monday, April 9).
Calderone, Michigan's captain, enjoyed his best season with the Maize and Blue, earning 45 points (25 goals, 20 assists) in 40 games. An All-Big Ten second-team selection, Calderone ranked fifth in the country in goals and tied for 15th in points. His 25 goals were the most in the Big Ten, while his 45 points were good for fourth throughout the conference. He finished the season with points in his last seven games, including three multi-point games. Over that span he accumulated 13 points (eight goals, five assists).
"I am extremely happy to sign my first NHL contract with the Dallas Stars," Calderone said. "I want to thank Michigan hockey for the best four years of my life. I also want to thank my family and friends who have supported me and helped make this dream come true."
The Trenton, Michigan, native played wing on Michigan's vaunted "DMC" line alongside classmate Dexter Dancs and junior Cooper Marody, who signed an entry-level contract with the Edmonton Oilers on Sunday (April 8). This season the trio accounted for 39 percent (53) of Michigan's 136 goals and 34 percent of the teams points (124), while being a combined +48 over that span.
Calderone leaves Michigan with 91 career points (54 goals, 37 assists). The Wolverines had an overall record of 81-58-11 during his career while capturing the 2015-16 Big Ten championship and earning two NCAA Tournament appearances.
