ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The No. 14-ranked University of Michigan softball team suffered its first home loss of the season, falling to Western Michigan, 8-2, in its final non-conference slate on Tuesday evening (May 1) at the Wilpon Complex, home of Alumni Field. The Wolverines struggled in all facets of the game and after falling behind early, could never catch up.
Western Michigan scored two runs apiece in the second and third innings and added insurance with four more over the last two frames. The Broncos' eight runs and 13 hits were the most allowed by U-M this season.
The Wolverines responded after WMU scored two in the top of the second when sophomore outfielder Haley Hoogenraad reached on a two-out fielding error and freshman Natalia Rodriguez sent her home on a high-chop single just off the first baseman's glove. It was the closest the game would be, as Western Michigan responded themselves with two more runs in the third on an RBI triple and subsequent single.
Michigan mounted a rally in the fifth, loading the bases with one out, but settled for just one run on a groundout to the 5-6 hole. The Wolverines led off the seventh with a hard-hit single up the middle from junior second baseman Faith Canfield but did not advance her past second base as three straight groundouts ended the threat and the game.
Senior right-handed pitcher Tera Blanco (9-3) took the loss from the circle, allowing four runs -- three earned -- on five hits and a walk through two innings.
Michigan (40-9) will head to East Lansing, Michigan, tomorrow (Wednesday, May 1) to take on in-state rival Michigan State at 4 p.m. at Secchia Stadium. The game will be broadcast live on the Big Ten Network.
