
Hughes, Team USA Earn Bronze at IIHF World Championships

COPENHAGEN, Denmark -- University of Michigan hockey freshman defenseman Quinn Hughes and the U.S. Men's National Team earned the bronze medal at the 2018 IIHF Men's World Championship after defeating Canada, 4-1, on Sunday (May 20). Also joining Hughes on the medal-winning team was Wolverine alumnus Dylan Larkin (2015).
The freshman blue-liner, who was the lone collegian on the roster, appeared in all 10 games for the Stars and Stripes. He recorded two assists with a plus-two rating, while averaging 12:13 minutes of ice time per game.
Larkin, who was competing in his fourth straight World Championship, ranked tied for fourth on the squad with nine points (three goals, six assists) with a plus-six rating, which ranked tied for second on the team. The current Detroit Red Wing ranked second on the roster with an average of 20:15 minutes of ice time per game.Â
Hughes had a standout rookie season in the Maize and Blue. His 29 points (five goals, 24 assists) ranked third amongst rookie defensemen in the NCAA and third in the Big Ten amongst freshmen. Hughes' 24 assists ranked fifth in the NCAA and first overall in the Big Ten among freshmen. Hughes' 24 assists are the most in program history by a freshman defenseman, while his 29 points rank third all-time.
Thirty-three Wolverines have played in the World Championships, including 27 for the United States and six for Canada. Michigan players have brought home 14 medals including three gold medals, two silver medals and nine bronze medals.
