TOLEDO, Ohio -- The University of Michigan men's track and field team closed out its 2018 regular season Friday afternoon (May 4) with a quartet of individual wins at the Toledo Invitational.
With just a week to go until the start of the Big Ten Championships on May 11-13 in Bloomington, Indiana, the Wolverines got victories amidst blustery weather in their regular-season finale from high jumper Alex Klemm, sprinter Desmond Melson, and distance runners Ryan Wilkie and Joost Plaetinck.
Klemm highlighted action in the field for Michigan, clearing 2.02m (6 feet, 7.5 inches) to earn a share of a three-way tie for first in the high jump. Teammate Max Wagner cleared the same height, but was awarded fourth place based on the number of attempts it took him.
Melson led a 1-2-3 sweep for the Wolverines at 400 meters, clocking 48.34 to lead teammates Blake Washington (49.08) and Alex Schwedt (49.59).
Led by Wilkie, four of the top five spots in the 1,500-meter standings belonged to Michigan. Wilkie and teammate Luke Wallace raced to the line, separated by fractions of a second in 3:59.85 and 3:59.93.
Plaetinck led a 1-2 sweep for Michigan at 5,000 meters, crossing first in 15:11.22 ahead of teammate Jacob Branch in 15:39.31.
