ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- In conjunction with ESPN and the Big Ten and Atlantic Coast conferences, the University of Michigan men's basketball team announced today (Friday, June 1) that the Wolverines will have a Big Ten/ACC Challenge rematch with North Carolina on Wednesday, Nov. 28, at Crisler Center. The Wolverines and Tar Heels met last year in the Challenge with UNC capturing an 86-71 victory in Chapel Hill, North Carolina.
The 14-game event will be played over a three-day period -- Monday through Wednesday, Nov. 26-28. All Challenge games will be televised on ESPN, ESPN2 or ESPNU, with TV platforms and times being announced at a later date.
Overall, Michigan has faced North Carolina in six games and holds a 2-4 record. Last year, U-M and UNC met in the Challenge game for the first time on a campus location with the Tar Heels claiming an 86-71 victory at the Dean Smith Center. The match-up was just the second time in the regular season, as the only other was a Dec. 29, 1992, meeting in the Rainbow Classic -- a 79-78 Wolverine victory.
The remaining four games were all played during the NCAA Tournament, including three straight from 1987-89. U-M lost in the 1987 second round (109-97) and 1988 Sweet 16 (78-68) before a 1989 Sweet 16 victory (92-87), which helped lead U-M to its first national title. The fourth game was in the 1992 national title game, a 77-71 loss, at the Superdome in New Orleans.
Michigan has played in 17 of the 19 Challenge series and holds a 7-10 all-time record; the Wolverines are 4-4 at home, 2-6 on the road and 1-0 at a neutral site.
Overall, the ACC has claimed 12 of the Commissioner's Cups and held on to the Cup after an 11-3 record last season. The ACC won 10 straight years when the series began in 1999 before the Big Ten rattled off seven straight (2009-15).
