ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The University of Michigan volleyball team will depart this week for a 10-day trip to Europe, head coach Mark Rosen announced Tuesday (June 19). The 10-day trip to Italy and Slovenia will take place between June 22-July 1, and will include four matches, multiple practices and sightseeing opportunities for the Wolverines.
The international experience has been made possible through the generous support of donors and the Michigan volleyball community.
"I am excited for this amazing educational opportunity," said Rosen. "In addition to participating in great volleyball competition, this will provide our student-athletes a memorable cultural and international experience. For many, this will be their first time to travel outside of the United States, and the learning opportunity this provides is one of the many ways that Michigan is the Leaders and Best."
Michigan will begin its journey with an overnight flight to Milan on June 22, landing in Italy on June 23. The Wolverines will then spend June 23-24 in Milan, playing their first match against the Italian Youth National Team on Sunday (June 24), before heading to Venice for two days (June 25-26). While in Venice, Michigan will sightsee and face off against Talmassons B1 of Italy on Tuesday (June 26).
The Maize and Blue will head to Maribor, Slovenia, on Wednesday (June 27), and will play two matches against ZOK Mladost of Croatia on Thursday (June 28) and Friday (June 29). The Wolverines will spend their final day in Slovenia visiting the city of Bled on Saturday (June 30) before heading back to Venice, Italy for a return flight to the United States on Sunday (July 1).
The Wolverines reported to Ann Arbor last week (June 11) for practice in preparation for the trip. In addition to 12 returners, all seven of Michigan's newcomers -- including six freshmen and one transfer -- will make the trip.
Michigan most recently took a foreign trip in 2013, visiting Brazil and Argentina during a 13-day tour of South America. This will mark the fourth foreign trip in program history, with the first coming in 2002.
