Current, Former Wolverines Ready for USATF Championships

ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- While the future of Michigan track and field was on display last weekend at USATF Juniors and New Balance Nationals, the program's past and present will take center stage this weekend as seven current or former Wolverines will battle the nation's best at the USATF Outdoor Championships in Des Moines, Iowa, on Thursday through Sunday (June 21-24).
Among the seven competitors with Michigan ties are four All-Americans from the 2017-18 academic year in Grant Cartwright (hammer throw), Andrew Liskowitz (shot put), Taylor McLaughlin (400-meter hurdles) and Jamie Morrissey (1,500 meters).
McLaughlin was fifth in the 400H at the NCAA Championships earlier this month for first team All-America honors, while shot put school record-holder Liskowitz earned second team honors in the shot. Cartwright was also a second teamer in the shot put, but instead will contest the hammer throw -- an event in which he placed fourth at Big Tens in May.
Morrissey, the Big Ten champion at 800 meters in May, was the final woman accepted into the field at 1,500 meters. Her 4:11.48 from April was the fastest regular-season time recorded in Michigan history.
Former national champion Mason Ferlic (3,000-meter steeplechase), multiple-time All-Americans Steven Bastien (decathlon), the 1,500-meter trio of Becca Addison, Amanda Eccleston and Shannon Osika, and Kira Garry (3,000-meter steeplechase) will also compete at the championships.
In addition to competing for the glory of being among the country's best in their respective events, the USATF Outdoor Championships also will serve as a qualifier to select Team USA rosters for various international competitions throughout the summer.
Two athletes per event will be selected to don the Red, White and Blue for USA at the NACAC Championships in Toronto, Canada, on Aug. 10-12. All of the current and former Michigan competitors compete in events contested at NACACs.
Cartwright, Liskowitz, McLaughlin and Morrissey (along with Addison, Eccleston and Osika) compete in events to be contested at the Inaugural Athletics World Cup in London, England, on July 14-15, between athletes from China, France, Germany, the United Kingdom, Jamaica, Poland, South Africa and the United States. Only one athlete in each event will be selected to compete, putting even more of a premium on a high placing this weekend.
Bastien will be aiming for one of seven roster spots for the Thorpe Cup combined event competition between the United States and Germany on July 27-28 in Fayetteville, Arkansas. Five men will be selected based on their finish this weekend, with two more selected at-large to fill out the roster.
Bastien was a member of the 2017 Thorpe Cup team.
