Freshman Emily Kiser is the fourth member of the freshman class to be profiled this summer. She talks about finding the time to balance everything, coming to Michigan with fellow Hoosier Amy Dilk and why she chose to attend U-M.
Q: How has your time at Michigan been so far?
A: It's been good, I have just been adjusting to my time at college. I would say my biggest adjustment so far is with time management. You don't have your mom or your dad around anymore to help you. I have just been learning to balance all of it, whether it is school or basketball.
Q: What has been the biggest stride you have made in the six weeks you have been here?
A: I would definitely say it is with the time management. And it is not just school and basketball, you have to be able to find time to yourself. You have to have the discipline to get it all done without having someone around telling you exactly what to do all the time.
Q: What classes are you taking?
A: I am taking CSP 100, which is the transition class from high school to college, and English 100, which has been a little difficult. The fact that everything is condensed into a shorter period of time just makes anything a little harder. Everything is crammed. It feels like just as I am turning in a paper, it is time to write another one!
Q: What have you been working on basketball-wise?
A: Right now, I feel like we are getting a lot of things thrown at us just to help us get used to how everything is run here. I am definitely working on getting stronger because everyone here is much more physical and faster than in high school. I am just trying to work really hard in the weight room with (strength and conditioning coach) Jamie (Preiss) and translate that onto the court.
Q: You and Amy Dilk grew up playing both with and against each other in Indiana. What's it like having her here with you at Michigan?
A: It's awesome. It's like you come to college and automatically have one friend because you have known each other for so long. We relate on a lot of things. But then again, I am already really close with all the other freshmen.
Q: How have the returners helped you and the other freshmen so far?
A: They have helped so much. Two days ago, we just had to call Hallie (Thome) because we were struggling and she was there for us. They have been there and been willing to help. I think the best thing is that they let us know that they are there for us. It's nice having a support group like them because they have been through it and know how to help us.
Q: Why did you pick Michigan?
A: I picked Michigan because of the balance of academics and athletics. There is a high expectation for both of them; I have definitely already seen that in the classroom this summer. It really feels like the best school in the country.
Q: Any idea what you want to study in school or do when you graduate?
A: I really don't know. I am going into all of this pretty open and will see what happens.
Q: What are your goals for this year?
A: I want to make the most of freshman year. This summer, my mentality has just been to survive and learn as much as I can before the real thing starts this fall. I just want to take advantage of all my opportunities this year.
