ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The University of Michigan Athletic Department announced Wednesday (Sept. 12) the establishment of the Champions Fund, a new initiative that will allow Michigan to retain its standing as one of the top college athletic programs in the nation.
"Our goal is to stay one step ahead of our competition and to remain one of the top college athletic programs in the country by investing directly into student-athlete welfare initiatives," said Warde Manuel, U-M's Donald R. Shepherd Director of Athletics. "This fund will support areas of personal growth for our student-athletes on a yearly basis and help us build and develop leaders in the community after graduation."
The athletic department invests more than $15 million annually toward counseling, career and leadership development, nutrition, athletic medicine, strength and conditioning, international travel and recruiting.
The Champions Fund will specifically finance these areas on an annual basis and continue to distinguish Michigan Athletics as a leader in the area of student-athlete development. With the athletic department receiving no funds from the state, no tax revenue and no funds from U-M operating budget or student fees, the vast majority of the funding for this important initiative comes from private support.
