ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- Senior Daniel Mukuna, junior Jack Hallahan and sophomore Umar Farouk Osman scored goals to lead the No. 19-ranked University of Michigan men's soccer team to a 3-1 win over rival Ohio State on a rainy Tuesday (Sept. 25) at U-M Soccer Stadium. With the win, Michigan remains atop the Big Ten with seven points, while also extending its unbeaten streak to seven matches.
The Wolverines were on the front foot from the get-go. The first shot of the match went to Ohio State, but after that, it was all Michigan. U-M broke through in the 21st minute when Hallahan took a corner on the near side and sent a beautiful left-footed service into the box where Mukuna waited, then headed it into the net past Ohio State goalkeeper Parker Siegfried. Two minutes later, Osman slipped the ball to Mertz, who laid it off for Hallahan. The Englishman put power on a shot, but Ohio State defender Osman Fofanah did well to deny what otherwise would have been a prime scoring opportunity.
The two teams had an abbreviated halftime due to the lengthy weather delay, opting to get right back into play for the second half. Hallahan once again looked dangerous, taking on the entire right side of the Ohio State defense in the 64th minute before seeing his shot just miss the near post.
Ohio State had a dangerous set-piece chance in the following minute, but Mukuna headed the cross away from danger.
Osman gave Michigan some breathing room in the 74th minute. Senior Noah Kleedtke played Mertz in behind the Ohio State defense and Mertz then laid it off for Osman on the left. The sophomore's first shot was saved by Siegfried, but the keeper spilled the rebound. Osman stayed with the play, poking his second shot into the back-right corner to give Michigan a 2-0 lead.
Hallahan capped off the home side's scoring in the 82nd minute on a highlight-reel strike. Cerda played the ball to Osman, who in turn passed it to Hallahan on the left side of the box. Hallahan turned an Ohio State defender around, cut in on his right foot and curled a shot into the top corner for a 3-0 lead.
Ohio State broke the shutout in the 86th minute on a goal from Michael Prosuk.Â
Sophomore Henry Mashburn started in goal and made one save when he denied Ohio State midfielder Jake Scheper in the 80th minute.
The Wolverines will begin the second half of the season on the road, when they face Northwestern on Saturday (Sept. 29) at Lakeside Field in Evanston, Illinois. The match is scheduled to begin begin at 8 p.m. CDT.
