ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The University of Michigan volleyball team picked up its eighth straight win on Friday evening (Sept. 7) with a 3-0 victory (25-14, 25-11, 25-20) over the Louisiana State University Tigers in the second match of the Michigan Challenge inside Cliff Keen Arena.
The sweep is Michigan's eighth straight to start the season, which marks a new program record.
Junior Sydney Wetterstrom was the only player to finish with kills in double-figures, posting 10 and tying her career-high .381 hitting percentage. Senior Carly Skjodt added nine kills, while redshirt junior Cori Crocker and freshman Paige Jones tallied six apiece.
From the back row, senior libero Jenna Lerg registered a match-high 19 digs. Crocker finished with five blocks to lead Michigan's defense at the net.
The Wolverines trailed just once in the match and held the Tigers to a (-.019) hitting percentage.
Michigan's offense dominated the first set, as the Wolverines posted a .344 hitting percentage behind four kills apiece from Skjodt and freshman Kiara Shannon. Using serving runs from Wetterstrom, Lerg, Skjodt and senior Maddy Abbott, the Wolverines took a strong lead at 15-10 before rattling off a 10-4 run to clinch set one, 25-14.
A kill from Crocker gave Michigan a 4-2 lead in the second set and launched a 7-0 serving run by Jones that pushed Michigan ahead, 11-2. The Wolverine offense was less efficient, but the Maize and Blue took advantage of Tiger miscues and just five LSU kills to win set two, 25-11.
A serving run by Lerg allowed the Wolverines to rattle off five-straight points to begin the third set, and Michigan used the energy to stretch its lead to nine, 19-10. Though the momentum was with Michigan for the majority of the first two sets, LSU found its footing in the third set and rallied to cut the Wolverine lead to four, 24-20, before the Maize and Blue finished things off for a 25-20 third-set win.
