COLUMBUS, Ohio -- The No. 11-ranked University of Michigan field hockey team completed a weekend sweep on the road, using a dominant second half to roll to a 6-0 win against Ball State on Sunday afternoon (Oct. 13) at Ohio State's Buckeye Turf Field. It was the Wolverines' seventh shutout win of the season and sixth over the last eight games.
Michigan scored four goals in the fourth quarter, including three over the final three minutes of the game. Junior/sophomore Emma Tamer tallied two goals off the penalty corner -- her first collegiate multi-goal game -- and added an assist, while sophomore Katie Anderson and junior Maya Gompper notched their first markers of the season.
The Wolverines took advantage of late goals throughout the contest. Anderson's game-winning tally came in the final minute of the first quarter, at 14:04, after she collected a pass from junior/sophomore Kate Burney on the right side of the circle and found the lower near-side corner of the cage. Tamer's first tally similarly fell in the final minute of the third quarter, at 44:35, on a rocketed shot off the penalty corner.
U-M carried the momentum into the fourth. Senior Meg Dowthwaite, who assisted on Tamer's third-quarter tally, notched her team-best seventh goal of the season, on a tip-in from the right side post at the 53:57 mark. Sophomore Kathryn Peterson scored in similar fashion with a tip goal at 57:02, before the Wolverines added two more goals over the next two minutes and change. Gompper dribbled in and found the lower-left corner at 58:08, and Tamer struck on another Michigan penalty corner less than a minute later, at 59:07, burying the direct shot for her third goal of the weekend a fourth of the season.
Michigan outshot the Cardinals, 31-5, including a 20-0 differential in the second half, and outcornered them, 15-3. Sophomore goalkeeper Anna Spieker earned one save -- in the second quarter -- and combined with junior Sidonie LaPlante for the shutout, while Ball State goalkeeper Wietske Overdijkink stopped 11 of 17 Michigan shots on goal.
The Wolverines (10-3) will return to Ann Arbor for a big homestand next weekend at Phyllis Ocker Field, where they will host Maryland at 6 p.m. on Friday (Oct. 18) and Penn State at noon on Sunday (Oct. 20). Admission is free to all regular-season home games.
