BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- The University of Michigan men's soccer team saw its seven-match unbeaten run end in a 1-0 loss to No. 4-ranked Indiana on Sunday afternoon (Oct. 13) at Armstrong Stadium.
Both teams had their stretches of strong play in the first half. In the 16th minute, Indiana whipped a cross into the box that senior goalkeeper Andrew Verdi came off his line to challenge. It fell to Joris Ahlinvi, who fired a shot on an open net, but junior Jackson Ragen tracked back to cover and headed it off the line to save a goal.
In the 24th minute, junior Umar Farouk Osman sent in a cross to the center of the box for graduate student Nebojsa Popovic. He leapt up and got a head on it, but struck it right at Indiana goalkeeper Roman Celetano, who made the save.
The Wolverines had two other chances in the first half. In the 28th minute, junior Austin Swiech lofted a ball in for Osman, but his header went wide of the post. Two minutes later, after Indiana tried to clear a corner kick, junior Marc Ybarra sent a ball back in and found sophomore Derick Broche, but his header went high of the crossbar. The match was scoreless at halftime.
The Hoosiers broke the deadlock in the 67th minute on a goal from Spencer Glass, whose high shot at the near post was fired past Verdi.
Verdi managed to keep the Wolverines in the match, making an incredible save in the 79th minute, denying AJ Palazzolo's header at the goal line. In the 82nd minute, Broche tried to find some space at the top of the box for left-footed shot, but an Indiana defender stepped in to block it.
Michigan's final chance came in the 88th minute off a long throw. Ragen headed the throw back toward the far post for Ybarra, but his attempted flick deflected off an Indiana defender and was picked up by Celetano as cries for a hand ball were waved off by the official.
Verdi played all 90 minutes in net and made four saves.
Michigan will step outside of conference play on Thursday (Oct. 17), when it returns to U-M Soccer Stadium to host Western Michigan. The match will begin at 7:30 p.m. and will be streamed live on BTN Plus.
