CARMEL, Ind. -- Led by junior Charlie Pilon's top-25 finish, the University of Michigan men's golf team carded a final-round 302 Tuesday (Oct. 15) and posted a 901 54-hole total to finish 10th at the Crooked Stick Invitational played at the Crooked Stick Golf Club.
In Indiana for a second straight week, the Wolverines got off to a slow start as U-M put up an opening 306 on the leaderboard. A 71 (-1) from Pilon and an ever-par 72 from senior Brent Ito helped the Wolverines drop 13 shots in the second round to post a 293 total and positioned themselves tied for 12th after 36 holes.
On Tuesday the field was delayed an hour to allow for overnight frost to dissipate. After teeing off, the 14-team field battled 25-mph winds and cloudy skies throughout the final round. With a 73 (+1) from Ito and a 75 from junior Henry Spring, Michigan tallied a 302 final to move up two spots and finish 10th.
Paced by his second-round score, Pilon guided the Wolverines for the first time this season and third time in his career as he tied for 21st with a 223 (75-71-77) total. After an opening 83, Ito rallied with his 72 (E) and 73 (+1) to crack the top 50 and tie for 48th, along with Spring (79-74-75). Sophomore Ben Dunne tied for 51st at 229 (76-76-77), while freshman Pier Francesco De Col tied for 59th at 231 (76-77-78)
The Wolverines will close their fall season when they head to Dallas, Texas, for Baylor's Royal Oaks Intercollegiate on Monday and Tuesday, Oct. 21-22. The Maize and Blue will make its sixth straight visit to the two-day, 54-hole event played at the Royal Oaks Country Club.
