ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The University of Michigan ice hockey team jumped out to a 3-0 first-period lead en route to a 4-3 victory and a weekend sweep against Lake Superior State on Saturday (Oct. 19) at Red Berenson Rink at Yost Ice Arena.
The Wolverines began their night on a long neutral-zone pass from Nick Blankenburg that led Jimmy Lambert into the opposing zone. Lambert wristed a shot at the top of the circle to start the scoring at the 15:41 mark.
Midway through the first, a shot from defenseman Keaton Pehrson rattled around in front of the net before finding the stick of Jack Becker. Becker's backhand shot extended the Michigan lead to 2-0 and gave Pehrson his first point at U-M.
Later in the first, a tripping penalty by Lake Superior State put the Wolverines back on the power play. After two unsuccessful rushes, the Wolverines regrouped and capitalized on their third try. Defenseman Eric Ciccolini moved the puck down low to find Johnny Beecher standing on the side of the net. Beecher then slid the puck across the crease to Becker standing on the far post. Becker, after whiffing on the first attempt, connected on his second effort and found the back of the net for his second goal of the night.
Lake Superior State was finally able to get its first goal of the series at the five-minute mark of the second period. Less than a minute later, a shot off Strauss Mann's left pad bounced directly to a streaking Laker forward who slammed it home to suddenly put the outcome in doubt in a 3-2 game.
Michigan answered as Jack Summers lit the lamp with 11:42 remaining in the second following assists by Michael Pastujov and Beecher.
The game remained tense, and just 22 seconds into the third, a one-timed shot beat Mann high on the short side to make it 4-3.
Michigan remained resilient and yielded only one scoring opportunity for the remainder of the game as Mann turned back a point-blank shot with six minutes to play.
The Wolverines will continue their non-conference slate next Friday and Saturday (Oct. 25-26) when they take on Western Michigan in a home-and-home series starting in Ann Arbor. Friday's game, Halloween at Yost, is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. and will be streamed on BTN+.
