Wolverines Sweep Titles at ITA Midwest Championships

EAST LANSING, Mich. -- For the second straight year, the University of Michigan women's tennis team swept both the singles and doubles titles at the ITA Midwest Regional Championships as the tournament wrapped up on Tuesday (Oct. 22) at the MSU Indoor Tennis Facility.
Senior Giulia Pairone gave Michigan its seventh straight singles title at the event, winning all five of her matches in straight sets. Pairone, ranked No. 47 by the ITA, knocked off three ranked opponents en route to the win.
In the championship match against Ohio State's No. 79-ranked Shiori Fukuda, Pairone held on a deuce point on her serve to start the match. She won the set's first five games before Fukuda got on the board with two straight games to cut the lead to 5-2. Pairone broke in the ensuing game to seal a 6-2 first-set win.
Pairone once again started fast in the second set and raced out to a 5-1 lead before Fukuda won three straight games to get back on serve. The Buckeye went back to the service line to serve to get back even at 5-5, but Pairone came through with another break of serve to wrap up the 6-2, 6-4 win.

Michigan captured the doubles title for the second straight year as junior Alyvia Jones and freshman Andrea Cerdan teamed up for the title. The Wolverine duo advanced to the championship match after knocking off the No. 12-ranked pair of Cameron Corse and Zoe Spence from Notre Dame, 8-3, in the semifinals.
In the championship match against Ohio State's Fukuda and Luna Dormet, the Wolverines struck first by breaking for a 5-4 lead. Michigan fell in a 15-40 hole in the ensuing service game but ripped off three straight points to keep the break at 6-4. That was all the space the Wolverines needed en route to the 8-5 win to punch their ticket to the ITA Fall National Championships.
Cerdan (3-1) also made a run to the semifinals of the singles main draw before she fell to Fukuda to set up the championship match between Pairone and Fukuda.
Freshman Nicole Hammond (2-1), Jones (2-1), sophomore Anca Craciun (1-1), junior Bella Lorenzini (1-1) and senior Chiara Lommer (0-1) all competed in the singles main draw, while senior Lera Patiuk (0-1) fell in singles qualifying.
Michigan will take a weekend off from competition and will be back in action Nov. 1-3 at the Lakewood Ranch Invite in Sarasota, Florida.
