COLLEGE PARK, Md. -- Sophomore Paige Jones recorded 16 kills and senior Sydney Wetterstrom added 14 to help power the University of Michigan volleyball team to its third straight Big Ten sweep (25-17, 25-21, 27-25) over the Maryland on Friday (Oct. 4) at XFINITY Center Pavilion.
The win improved the Wolverines' record to 10-3 overall and 3-0 in Big Ten play. It is the first time Michigan has gone 3-0 in conference play since 2010.
In addition to the attacking prowess from Jones and Wetterstrom, the Wolverines got some help from freshman May Pertofsky, who had 11 kills and hit .333 to go along with four aces. U-M got nine digs from Wetterstrom to lead them defensively, while freshman Jess Robinson added four total blocks. Senior MacKenzi Welsh dished out 41 assists, good for a 13.7 assists-per-set mark.
Michigan hit .350 in the match while it held Maryland to just .211. The Maize and Blue also held the advantage in total kills (52-31), assists (51-29) and digs (39-27).
The Wolverines took set one, 25-17, thanks to a solid performance on the attacking side. Michigan put together a .353 attack percentage with 15 kills in the set victory. The Wolverines ended on a strong note, stretching their lead to its largest margin in the set to finish out the stanza.
U-M continued to roll by securing a 25-21 victory in set two. The Wolverines were propelled by a strong performance on the attacking side once again, registering a .303 attack percentage with 17 kills in the set win. The Wolverines rallied from down six at 13-7 to grab the win.
The Wolverines won the third set, 27-25, to earn its third Big Ten sweep. Michigan put together a .389 attack percentage with 20 kills in the set. Michigan survived one Maryland set point before overtaking the Terrapins to win the stanza. The Michigan offense also got a boost from three aces in the stanza.
Michigan will be back in action Sunday (Oct. 6), when it will take on Ohio State in Columbus at Covelli Center. The matchup is scheduled for 1 p.m. and will be streamed live on BTNÂ Plus.Â
