CHAPEL HILL, N.C. --Â The University of Michigan women's soccer team fell to No. 2-ranked and regional No. 1 seed North Carolina, 4-0, Sunday (Nov. 24) in the NCAA Tournament third round at Dorrance Field.
The setback concluded the Wolverines' season with a 17-6-1 overall record, and included U-M advancing to the third round of the NCAA Tournament for the first time since 2013, appearing in the Big Ten Tournament final for the first time since 2005 and defeating four ranked opponents.
» Michigan concludes its season with a 17-6-1 overall record.
» The Wolverines defeated four ranked opponents in 2019.
» U-M made its longest run in the NCAA Tournament since the 2013 campaign.
Junior Sarah Stratigakis led the Wolverines with four shots and two reaching goal, while junior goalkeeper Hillary Beall made eight saves on the afternoon.
The Tar Heels took an early 1-0 lead in the first six minutes on a good passing sequence inside the box to set up Isabel Cox. Michigan had what looked to be a chance when Stratigakis lofted a ball from 30 yards out and looked to go up and over Claudia Dickey, but the North Carolina keeper got back just in time to grab the ball out of the air.
Beall came up big in the 27th minute, when she got up and knocked a ball out of the top corner of the net before the defense cleared out the corner-kick opportunity.
Michigan allowed a penalty kick in the 36th minute with Beall making a monster save on the initial shot but was unable to secure the save on the rebound and the Tar Heels buried the ball in the net to give UNC a 2-0 lead at halftime.
The Tar Heels extended their lead six minutes into the second half when Cox scored her second goal of the match off a long lead pass.
North Carolina added one final goal in the 67th minute to cap off the Tar Heels' victory.
