LINCOLN, Neb. -- Senior Connor Johnston of the University of Michigan men's tennis team advanced to the singles quarterfinals at the Big Ten Singles and Doubles Championhips (Nov. 1-3), highlighting a two-player Wolverine contingent at the Nebraska Tennis Center.
Johnston fell Saturday (Nov. 2) in the quarterfinals to Northwestern's Steven Forman, 3-6, 5-7. Johnston won a pair of singles matches, downing Nuzhny 6-2, 6-3 to start his tournament. In the round of 16, he bested Northwestern's Abhijeet Joshi in three-sets, 3-6, 6-3, 6-0. He fell into the back draw after his quarterfinal loss, where he was bested by Northwestern's Trice Pickens, 3-6,4-6.
In doubles, Johnston teamed with junior Kristofer Siimar, and the pair went 2-0 in the doubles back draw. After it suffered and opening-round loss in the main draw on Friday (Nov. 1), the pair defeated Nebraska's William Gleason and Alvaro Moreno, 6-4, on Saturday (Nov. 2). On Sunday (Nov. 3) the duo finished off the tournament with a pair of wins with a 6-3 win over Wisconsin's Daniel Zuzhny and Scott Sculley and a 7-5 win over William Gleason and Henry Patrick Cacciatore of Northwestern.
The Wolverines will next be in actions Wednesday through Sunday, Nov. 6-10 at the ITA National Fall Championships in Newport Beach, California, to end their fall season.
