ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The No. 10-ranked University of Michigan football team lost its regular-season finale against No. 2 Ohio State, 56-27, on Saturday (Nov. 30) at Michigan Stadium.
The Buckeyes took advantage of an offside penalty in the first half and a big third quarter to remain undefeated at 12-0 heading into the Big Ten Championship Game. Michigan's passing game was on display in the first half but could not duplicate the effort in the second half as the Wolverines fell to 9-3 on the year.
Senior quarterback Shea Patterson threw for 250 yards in the first half to pass Tom Brady on Michigan's career passing yards list. Patterson's first-half total was more than Ohio State had allowed in any game this season. Patterson finished the game with 305 yards on 18-of-43 passing with one touchdown and one interception.
» Shea Patterson threw for 305 yards -- 250 in the first half -- and passed Tom Brady on Michigan's all-time passing yards list.
» Giles Jackson scored on a 22-yard end-around on the Wolverines' opening possession.
» Donovan Peoples-Jones (25-yard reception) and Hassan Haskins (two-yard rush) also scored TDs for Michigan.
Ohio State racked up 577 yards of total offense and averaged 20.9 yards per pass completion. Quarterback Justin Fields threw for 302 yards and four touchdowns, and running back J.K. Dobbins ran the ball 31 times for 211 yards and four touchdowns.
On a cold and dreary afternoon, the offenses lit up Michigan Stadium in the first half. The Wolverines and Buckeyes combined for 44 points and 603 yards. Both teams averaged over 8.0 yards per play in the first half.
On the opening drive of the game, freshman wide receiver Giles Jackson scored on a 22-yard end-around, but Quinn Nordin missed the PAT, and the Wolverines led, 6-0. U-M converted a key third down earlier in the drive when Patterson scrambled to his left and found sophomore wide receiver Ronnie Bell for a seven-yard gain on third-and-five.
Ohio State answered the opening score with a five-yard rushing touchdown by Dobbins. The Buckeyes also had a key third-down conversion with a 28-yard pass from Fields to Dobbins on third-and-14. The extra point gave OSU a 7-6 lead with 8:50 to play in the first quarter.
The Buckeyes connected on a 57-yard touchdown pass from Fields to sophomore wide receiver Chris Olave to make it 14-6 late in the first quarter. Michigan answered with a three-play, 75-yard drive that included a 41-yard pass from Patterson to senior tight end Sean McKeon and a 25-yard touchdown throw from Patterson to junior wide receiver Donovan Peoples-Jones.
Dobbins scored his second touchdown of the game on the first drive of the second quarter, rushing it in from six yards out on third-and-four. The touchdown put Ohio State on top, 21-13.
A fumble in the red zone and a penalty on fourth down led to another Ohio State touchdown. U-M forced a punt after the turnover, but an offside penalty on fourth-and-four kept the drive alive. On the next play, Fields threw a 47-yard pass to freshman wide receiver Garrett Wilson to set up a five-yard touchdown run by Dobbins, his third of the game, to make it 28-13 OSU.
It was all Ohio State in the third quarter as Fields threw a pair of touchdown passes. He tossed a six-yard TD to senior wide receiver K.J. Hill Jr. and a 30-yard touchdown pass to Wilson as the Buckeyes opened up a 42-16 advantage.
The Wolverines drew closer with a 45-yard field goal by Nordin and a two-yard rushing touchdown by Hassan Haskins. A successful two-point conversion attempt by Haskins made the score 42-27.
Michigan forced an Ohio State punt but was unable to convert on fourth down. With excellent field position, the Buckeyes drove the ball 28 yards on four plays for another touchdown to extend the lead to 49-27. OSU added another touchdown on a 33-yard run by Dobbins with 6:30 to play.
With the regular season now completed, the Wolverines await bowl game announcements on Sunday, Dec. 8, to see who and where they will be playing this postseason.
