ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The University of Michigan ice hockey team started off their weekend against Minnesota with a 1-1 draw after tying the game midway through the third on Friday night (Nov. 8) at Yost Ice Arena.
The first goal of the night came in the last minute of the second period. The Gophers received a fortunate bounce after a shot from the point was blocked by a Michigan defenseman. The puck rattled around until it found its way to Minnesota's Brannon McManus, who, using his skate to draw the puck to his stick, delivered a back-handed shot that beat the glove of Strauss Mann. The goal came with 57 seconds left in the period and it remained that way heading into the second intermission.
Determined to even the game at one apiece, the Wolverines started the third with energy. Michigan received its fourth power-play opportunity of the night and shortly thereafter drew another penalty for a 5-on-3 advantage for nine seconds. The Wolverines were unable to convert on either man-advantage, but did use it to generate some momentum.
With 11:24 remaining in the third period and building off of the momentum shift, Michigan put one past former Wolverine netminder Jack Lafontaine. Graduate transfer Jacob Hayhurst was credited with his first goal as a Wolverine and his 23rd career goal when he redirected a shot from Luke Martin into the back of the net.
Michigan had an 18-4 shot advantage in the third period, the most shots on goal the Wolverines have had in a single period this season
While no action occurred in the ensuing overtime, Minnesota ended the game on a breakaway goal in the 3-on-3 double overtime. The game was officially recorded as a tie according to NCAA rules, but the Gophers walked away with an additional Big Ten point in the conference standings.
Michigan outshot Minnesota, 34-29, but were 0-for-6 on power-play opportunities.
Michigan and Minnesota will conclude their weekend series Saturday night (Nov. 9) at Yost Ice Arena. Puck drop is scheduled for 5 p.m., and the game will be broadcast live on Big Ten Network.
