Fall Academic All-Big Ten Selections Announced

ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The Big Ten Conference office released its fall 2019 Academic All-Big Ten teams on Wednesday (Dec. 11), with the University of Michigan placing 118 student-athletes on the honored list.
Criteria for making the Academic All-Big Ten team include being in at least their second academic year at their institution and maintaining a cumulative grade-point average of 3.0 or higher.
The breakdown of the 118 Michigan student-athletes on the list is 12 from field hockey, 37 from football, 12 from men's cross country, 21 from women's cross country, 14 from men's soccer, 11 from women's soccer and 11 from volleyball. Michigan has seen a dramatic increase since 2009, when the total was 41 honorees.
Michigan's total of 118 Academic All-Big Ten selections were third most in the Big Ten behind Nebraska's 138 and Michigan State's 120.
The Big Ten also recognizes student-athletes with a GPA of 4.0 or higher with four student-athletes from Michigan hitting the mark. The three are sophomore Gabe Mudel (men's cross country), sophomore Anne Forsyth (women's cross country), junior Alice Hill (women's cross country) and sophomore Megan Worrel (women's cross country).
The conference office also awards Academic All-Big Ten distinction in the winter and spring seasons, and the Distinguished Scholar Award at the end of the academic year. Student-athletes eligible for the Distinguished Scholar Award must be letterwinners in at least their second year in residence at their institution. Qualifying student-athletes must have earned a GPA of 3.7 or higher for the current academic year, excluding summer school.
