Sophomore Amy Dilk turned in a career-best 26 points on 10-for-12 shooting, including a 2-for-3 showing from three-point range, to go with six boards, an assist and steal in 40 minutes. Senior Kayla Robbins had the second 20-point game of her career with 20 points, six boards and three assists.
Both teams were slow to start before Michigan used a 10-0 run for a 12-3 lead at the 4:01 mark of the first quarter, capped by a layup from sophomore Naz Hillmon off a steal from Robbins.
Following a back-and-forth second quarter, Michigan hit the break with a 32-31 lead after Robbins blocked Florida State's shot attempt and Dilk raced the length of the floor to score right before the buzzer sounded. Robbins paced the Wolverines with 13 points in the first half, with Dilk chipping in 11.
FSU opened the third quarter on a 6-0 run before Hillmon scored underneath to stop the spurt and pull Michigan back within three, 37-34, with 5:49 on the third-quarter clock.
With Florida State up four points at the 3:17 mark of the third, Dilk hit a triple and freshman Izabel Varejão made good on a pair of free throws to nudge the Wolverines back in front (43-42) with 2:19 to go.
Florida State extended its lead back to five with 30 seconds to go, but Dilk hit her second triple of the quarter right before the buzzer to pull Michigan back within two, 50-48, after three quarters.
FSU scored the first four points of the final quarter for a 54-48 lead just moments into the frame before Michigan answered with four straight from Varejão and Dilk to get back within two, 54-52.
The Seminoles scored eight straight points for their first double-figure lead of the game, 62-52, with 5:47 remaining. Robbins scored five straight points on an old-fashioned three-point play and a layup, with Michigan forcing a turnover on the other end to get within five, 62-57, with 4:17 left.
The Maize and Blue cut the lead to three points, 68-65, off a putback from senior Akienreh Johnson at the 2:39 mark. U-M came up empty on the next three possessions as Florida State scored two straight baskets, capped by a layup off a Michigan turnover for a 72-65 lead with 1:01 remaining.
FSU went 5-for-6 at the line down the stretch to seal the game.
Michigan will be back in action next weekend, when it travels to Maryland to open Big Ten Conference play. The Wolverines and Terps will square off Saturday (Dec. 28) at 8 p.m. in College Park, Maryland, and the contest will be broadcast live on Big Ten Network.
