LAS VEGAS, Nev. -- Sophomore Mason Parris advanced to the heavyweight semifinals to headline the No. 22-ranked University of Michigan wrestling team's first day of competition at the 38th annual Cliff Keen Las Vegas Invitational on Friday (Dec. 6) at the Las Vegas Convention Center. With three additional Wolverines still alive in the consolation bracket, U-M sits in 15th place with 23 points.
Parris, the top seed and nation's No. 2-ranked heavyweight, earned bonus points in all three of his first-day bouts, including quick first-period pins in both the first round and quarterfinals. Parris used his fireman's carry to strike immediately against Northern Iowa's Carter Isley in the quarterfinals before settling in to collect the fall at the 54-second mark. He also pinned South Dakota State's Blake Wolters in less than a minute in his first bout of the day, going high-crotch to double leg to cradle and eventually a half for the fall at 56 seconds. Parris is 13-0 on the season with four pins.
Michigan went 1-for-3 in the quarterfinal round, with junior/sophomore Jack Medley and freshman Cole Mattin dropping bouts at 125 and 141 pounds, respectively, after a pair of gritty wins apiece in the morning session.
Medley, unseeded at 125 pounds, dropped a 12-5 decision to Northwestern's Michael Deaugustino in the quarterfinals. He earned two solid wins in the morning session, scoring three takedowns, a reversal and 3:08 riding-time advantage en route to a 9-4 decision against three-time NCAA qualifier Christian Moody of Oklahoma before edging North Carolina State's 15th-ranked Jakob Camacho, 6-5, behind a late reversal and rideout.
Mattin, seeded eighth at 141 pounds, also earned his points on the mat in a gritty 4-3 decision over Utah Valley's Cameron Hunsaker in the second round. After nearly getting ridden out in the second period, Mattin scored a reversal and two-point near fall in the final 15 seconds of the frame before riding for the bulk of the third period. Mattin also defeated Virginia's Brian Courtney, 5-3, in the first round behind two single-leg takedowns in the first period. He fell to Ohio State's top-ranked Luke Pletcher in the quarterfinals.
Junior/sophomore Jelani Embree, seeded ninth at 184 pounds, rounds out the Wolverines' remaining competitors after posting a 3-1 record on the day. He bounced back from a 3-2 loss to Iowa State's 11th-ranked Samuel Colbray with back-to-back wrestleback wins, including a 9-4 decision against Northwestern's Jack Jessen -- on two takedowns and two back points -- in his evening-session match.
Michigan will return to action Saturday (Dec. 7) for the second and final day of competition at the 2019 Cliff Keen Invitational in Las Vegas, Nevada. U-M will hit the mat at 9 a.m. PST for the semifinals and continued wrestleback rounds, while the championships finals are slated for a 3 p.m. PST start. All matches will take place at the Las Vegas Convention Center.
