Wolverines' Final Push Seals Fifth Straight Win

ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The University of Michigan women's basketball team held Indiana without a field goal over the final 4:13 and went on an 11-1 run to end the contest en route to a 67-58 win over Indiana on Thursday evening (Feb. 14) at Crisler Center. The victory marked Michigan's fifth straight win.
Michigan found itself down by one point, 57-56, with 4:13 to go after an Indiana layup. U-M did not allow the Hoosiers to score from the field the rest of the game, embarking on an 11-1 run to close the contest. The spurt was ignited by junior Akienreh Johnson's put-back layup with 2:46 remaining to put the home team ahead for good, 58-57.
Senior Hallie Thome converted a three-point play on Michigan's next possession to push the U-M advantage to four, 61-57, with 1:56 left. Indiana converted one free throw on its next trip down to trim the lead to three, but Johnson delivered once again with a layup for a 63-58 margin with just 1:08 remaining.
Sophomore Hailey Brown came up with a block on Indiana's layup attempt, with freshman Naz Hillmon grabbing the board for the Wolverines. Michigan turned the ball over out of a timeout, but senior Nicole Munger drew the charge on the defensive end to give Michigan the ball back with a five-point lead and 29 ticks left.
Munger went 4-for-4 from the free-throw line over the last half-minute as Michigan took the nine-point win.
Johnson led the way for the Maize and Blue, going for 16 points on 7-for-8 shooting and seven rebounds. Thome recorded her fourth double-double of the season with 14 points and 11 rebounds, putting her one point shy of the 2,000-point mark. Munger chipped in 11 points and sophomore Deja Church had 10 points, four rebounds, two blocks and a steal in 30 minutes. Michigan outrebounded the Hoosiers, 36-29, and led by as many as 10 in the contest.
Indiana scored four straight points to start the third, taking its largest lead of the game (35-26) at the 8:53 mark of the period.
Michigan responded with seven straight points on a Hillmon layup, Church floater and Brown triple to force an Indiana timeout with 7:44 to go and Michigan down just two.
Junior Kayla Robbins turned in six third-quarter points and Munger hit a buzzer-beating triple to give Michigan a 51-48 lead after 30 minutes.
Michigan led by as many as 10 points in the opening quarter before Indiana answered with a 10-0 run that spanned the first and second quarters en route to a 31-26 lead at the break.
U-M takes to the road for its next contest when the Wolverines take on Illinois in Champaign on Sunday (Feb. 17) at 2 p.m. CST.
