ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- An 11-goal first half and three Wolverine hat tricks powered the University of Michigan women's lacrosse team to a 20-4 victory over Central Michigan in its home opener on Friday (Feb. 15) at U-M Lacrosse Stadium.
The Wolverines recorded a program-high 52 shots, besting the previous total of 47 against St. Bonaventure (Feb. 28, 2015). U-M also tied a program-best 20 goals, which was last accomplished against Niagara (April 4, 2017).
Michigan had nine different goal-scorers with six recording multi-goal outings. Juniors Lilly Grass and Nadine Stewart led the Michigan offense with four goals each, marking the first hat tricks of the season for both and the third straight multi-goal effort for Grass. Also notching multiple goals against the Chippewas were sophomores Erin Daly, who recorded a hat trick, Caitlin Muir, Maggie Kane and senior Adriana Pendino, who all netted two goals. Muir also had a team-best five points and added three assists.
Stewart also had a breakout game on defense with a team-best three caused turnovers and tied a team high with three ground balls. In her first start of the season, Caroline Witkowski picked up three ground balls while Quinn Melidona also had three ground balls.
Junior Molly Garrett led U-M on the draw control with five and Kaitlyn Mead had four draw controls for the Wolverines. In net, senior Mira Shane earned her third win of the season, playing the first half of the contest before Arielle Weissman played the final 30 minutes and made two saves.
The Chippewas got on the scoreboard first, netting a goal less than five minutes into the game. Chandler Kirby scored the equalizer with 19:27 remaining in the first half and it sparked the Michigan offense, which rattled off 10 unanswered goals over the course of the next 17 minutes to give the Wolverines an 11-1 lead, in part from three goals from Daly and two from Grass. CMU snapped U-M's goal streak thanks to a tally with 27 seconds to go in the half to cut the Chippewas' deficit to 11-2.
As it did in the first half, Central Michigan was the first to score in the second, with a tally one and half minutes into the half. Michigan answered with back-to-back goals to bring the lead back to 10, 13-3, with 27:22 to play. The Chippewas added one final goal before Michigan closed out the game by netting seven unanswered goals, including Morgan Whitaker and Kelly Poole scoring their first collegiate goals.
The Wolverines will be back in action Sunday (Feb. 17) when they welcome Dartmouth to U-M Lacrosse Stadium for a noon contest. [ Tickets ]
