MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. -- Behind 22 points – 15 coming on three-pointers – from sophomore Jordan Poole, the University of Michigan men's basketball team (No. 7 AP, No. 7 Coaches Poll) earned its sixth road win of the season with a 69-60 victory at Minnesota on Thursday night (Feb. 21) inside Williams Arena.
The win marks the second of the season over the Golden Gophers, with the first coming at Crisler Center on Jan. 22.
Poole led all scorers with 22 points, while junior Jon Teske tied career highs in points (17) and blocks (five). Freshman Ignas Brazdeikis contributed 10 points. Sophomore Zavier Simpson scored five points, but dished out a season-high 12 assists and grabbed six rebounds to go with three steals.
Senior Charles Matthews led Michigan on the boards with nine rebounds, while Teske grabbed seven.
Baskets proved elusive over the first five minutes of the game, as the Wolverines held a 9-6 lead at first media timeout with 14:51 to go in the first half. After the timeout, three-pointers from Brazdeikis and Simpson bookended a Matthews layup to extend the Michigan lead to 17-6 with 11:55 remaining in the first half.
After Minnesota ended a scoreless drought of 3:23 with a layup followed by a pair of made free throws, a deep three-pointer from Poole doubled the Michigan lead, 20-10, with 8:53 to go. Michigan then entered a cold streak of its own during which it made one field goal over a three-minute span. Minnesota did not take advantage, and the Maize and Blue led, 22-14, with 5:05 to go in the half.
Michigan's defense propelled it to a 28-18 halftime advantage. Poole led all scorers with 11 points on 4-for-8 shooting. Teske added six with two rebounds and three blocks.
The Gophers' 18 first-half points are tied for the fewest the Wolverines have allowed in any half all season (Maryland, Feb. 16). Minnesota shot 22.2 percent in the half, compared to Michigan's 35.5 percent clip.
The second half began with Michigan hitting five of its first six shots, courtesy of Brazdeikis, Poole and Teske. The trio outscored the Gophers, 12-2, over a three-minute span and pushed the U-M lead to 40-22 at the under-16 media timeout (15:51).
Minnesota cut into the Michigan lead, 53-40, with just under eight minutes to play thanks in part to the Gophers scoring seven points in a little over sixty seconds.
Two three-pointers from Teske brought the lead up to 64-47 with 3:39 remaining in the contest. With 1:50 left in the game, Minnesota trailed, 66-52, and began to foul Michigan. The Wolverines missed three free throws over that stretch but were able to hold of the Gophers.
The Wolverines will be back in action Sunday (Feb. 24), when they host rival Michigan State at Crisler Center. Tipoff is scheduled for 3:45 p.m., and the game will be broadcast on FS1.
