MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. -- The University of Michigan wrestling team recorded eight total placewinners, including three in the top three at their respective weights, to place sixth (76.5 points) on the second and final day at the 2019 Big Ten Championships on Sunday (March 10) at Minnesota's Williams Arena.
Senior/junior Myles Amine was the Wolverines' top finisher with a runner-up finish at 174 pounds, after dropping a 3-2 decision to Penn State's top-ranked Mark Hall in a rematch of last season's Big Ten Championships final. Hall scored the bout's only takedown off a single leg late in the first period, while Amine was in deep on a single of his own at the final buzzer in the third but could not finish on the edge.
Fifth-year senior Alec Pantaleo and senior/junior Logan Massa bounced back from losses in last night's semifinal round with two wins apiece to finish third at 157 and 165 pounds, respectively.
Pantaleo avenged a loss to Northwestern's third-ranked Ryan Deakin in the morning consolation semifinals, scoring four takedowns to claim a 10-4 decision. Pantaleo, ranked fifth, finished on a go behind and double leg in the first, added another double leg in the second and iced it with another go behind late while accumulating 1:20 in riding-time advantage. Pantaleo also earned a 5-3 decision over Iowa's seventh-ranked Kaleb Young -- his second of the weekend -- in the medal round behind single-leg takedowns in the first and second periods.
Massa, ranked seventh, earned his second win on the weekend over a higher-ranked opponent with a 2-1 decision over Wisconsin's third-ranked Evan Wick in the third-place match. After a scoreless first period, Massa earned his escape point -- and drew a stall warning -- in the second before Wick choose top to start the third. The Badger wrestler rode out the period but dropped down below the knee in the final 10 seconds to draw another stall warning and give Massa the deciding point. With the win, Massa avenged three straight losses -- all last season -- to Wick. He also used three takedowns to earn a 7-2 decision over Ohio State's Te-Shawn Campbell in the consolation semifinals.
Junior/sophomore Kanen Storr took fifth place at 141 pounds in his Big Ten Championships debut with a 7-4 decision against Wisconsin's eighth-ranked Tristan Moran in the medal match -- his second win over the Badger this weekend. Storr scored three takedowns -- one in each period -- and iced it with a late double leg in the third and 1:41 in riding-time advantage. Storr dropped a 12-6 decision to Minnesota's Mitch McKee in the consolation semifinals after giving up a reversal and four-point tilt in the second period.
The Wolverines went 2-1 in their seventh-place matches, with sophomore Drew Mattin earning bonus points with a first-period pin at 125 pounds and freshman Mason Parris securing the final NCAA automatic bid at heavyweight.
Mattin pinned Purdue's Devin Schroder at the 2:11 mark after building up a big first-period lead. He scored on a single leg on the edge 30 seconds into the bout and added four near-fall points off a suck back before locking up a cradle for his second fall of the season.
Parris also defeated a Boilermaker opponent in his seventh-place match, using a pair of takedowns to earn a 7-3 decision over Jacob Aven. Parris finished on single legs in the first and second periods, riding out both frames after the takedowns to accumulate 1:50 in time advantage. Aven scored on a takedown of his own late in the bout, but Parris escaped and held on to earn the automatic qualifying bid for his first NCAA Championships appearance.
Fifth-year senior Malik Amine dropped another heartbreaker in the seventh-place match at 149 pounds, falling to Northwestern's Shayne Oster, 8-6, on a late takedown. Amine, who struck first on a first-period single leg and added a reversal in the second, retook the lead with a reversal midway through the third. He let Oster go, tying the score, and the Wildcat wrestler scored the deciding takedown out of a scramble with just 25 seconds remaining.
The Wolverines will take a two-week break to prepare for the 2019 NCAA Championships, scheduled for March 21-23 in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Michigan will send at least seven wrestlers to the national event and have an opportunity to add more when NCAA at-large selections are unveiled on Tuesday (March 12). NCAA seeds and full brackets will be announced on Wednesday (March 13).
