PITTSBURGH, Pa. -- Senior/junior Stevan Micic, fifth-year senior Alec Pantaleo and senior/junior Myles Amine of the University of Michigan wrestling team locked up All-America honors at the 2019 NCAA Championships on Friday (March 22) in front of a crowd of 18,100 at PPG Paints Arena. The Wolverines sit in eighth place (48 points) -- tied with Minnesota -- in the team standings.
The trio claimed NCAA All-America honors for the third time in their careers and represent the 193rd, 194th and 195th All-America citations in program history -- and the first under first-year head coach Sean Bormet. Michigan has boasted at least one All-American in 23 of the last 25 seasons, including three or more in each of the last five seasons.
It was a tough evening round for the Wolverines, who narrowly dropped both of their semifinal bouts and went 1-for-3 in the Round of 12.
Pantaleo, seeded fourth at 157 pounds, was the bright spot, bouncing back from a controversial 5-3 quarterfinal loss against North Carolina State's Hayden Hidlay -- after a late hands-to-the-face penalty sent it to overtime -- to earn two wrestleback wins, including a dominant 13-2 major decision over Minnesota's Steve Bleise in the Round of 12 behind five takedowns and 3:15 in riding-time advantage. He followed that wrestleback win with another, avenging his dual loss to Arizona State's Christian Pagdilao with a 9-4 decision behind three takedowns, a two-point suck back and 1:32 in riding time.
Micic and Amine both secured their All-America honors with wins in the morning quarterfinal round.
Micic, seeded second at 133 pounds, used a second-period high crotch to secure a 3-2 decision over Iowa's seventh-seeded Austin DeSanto -- his second quarterfinal win over the Hawkeye in as many seasons. DeSanto's two points came on a pair of stall calls in the last 30 seconds of the bout. Micic was doomed by a first-period takedown and rideout in his next bout, falling to Rutgers' third-seeded Nick Suriano, 4-1, the evening semifinal round.
Amine, seeded fourth at 174 pounds, gutted out a 4-2 overtime decision over Lehigh's fifth-seeded Jordan Kutler in the quarterfinals, scoring on a second-effort low double leg with just seven seconds remaining in the second sudden-victory frame -- after he escaped with just one second remaining to even the score in the first tiebreaker. Amine also went to overtime in the semifinals, falling to Penn State's top-seeded Mark Hall, 2-1, in the tiebreaker.
The Wolverines dropped heartbreakers in their other two Round-of-12 matchups, eliminating senior/junior Logan Massa and freshman Mason Parris from the tournament.
Massa, seeded sixth at 165 pounds, fell to Iowa's top-seeded Alex Marinelli, 5-3, on takedowns in the first and second periods. He earned bonus points in both of his morning-session wrestlebacks, including an 11-3 major decision against Rider's 14th-seeded Jesse Dellavecchia with four takedowns, a reversal and 2:08 in riding-time advantage.
Parris, seeded fifth at heavyweight in his NCAA debut, also earned bonus points in both of his morning matches, most notably a quick first-period fall at 1:46 against Lock Haven's 11th-seeded Matt Voss after building up an 11-point lead -- his second pin of the tournament. Parris was pinned himself in his bloodround match against Central Michigan's ninth-seeded Matt Stencel after getting wrapped up in a cradle while in deep on a leg attack at the 2:31 mark.
Sophomore Drew Mattin and junior/sophomore Kanen Storr were also eliminated after suffering losses in the second of two morning wrestleback rounds. Mattin, seeded 16th at 125 pounds, sacrificed an early lead against Michigan State's ninth-seeded RayVon Foley, falling, 9-4, after getting caught in neutral danger for four points in the third period. Storr, seeded eighth at 141 pounds, was also stunned in the third period when Nebraska's 16th-seeded Chad Red broke open a deadlocked bout with a four-point tilt en route to a 7-1 decision.
The Wolverines will return for the NCAA Championships' fifth session at 11 a.m. on Saturday (March 23) at PPG Paints Arena in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. The morning session will feature third-, fifth- and seventh-place matches. The finals will kick off at 7 p.m. and will be broadcast live on ESPN.
