CHAPEL HILL, N.C. -- Using a career-best-tying 69 (-3) by sophomore Henry Spring and a 70 (-2) from senior Nick Carlson, the University of Michigan men's golf team rallied in Sunday's (March 24) final round and posted the day's lowest round at 285 (-3) to move up two spots and finish 12th with an 898 54-hole total at UNC's Tar Heel Intercollegiate.
Opening with team tallies of 304 and 309, the Wolverines got off to a slow start in Saturday's first day of play and found themselves 14th with a 613 36-hole total. After posting 19 total birdies during its first 36 holes, the Maize and Blue equaled that tally with 19 alone in the final 18 holes, which helped lead to U-M's third sub-par team total of the season.
"Obviously we were not happy with where we finished for the tournament," said U-M head coach Chris Whitten. "We challenged ourselves after yesterday's poor play to come out and get things right in the final round. The guys played confidently and moved in the right direction with the lowest round of the day. We have played a lot of great final rounds this year and need to get off to a better start in the next event."
After pacing the Wolverines on the opening day, Spring continued that trend as he posted a career-best-tying 69 (-3) total in the final round, helping him close with his third career top-20 finish as he tied for 16th with a 218 (+2) total. Using his team-leading seventh sub-par round of the season of 70 (-2) in the final round, Carlson tied for 31st at 223 (75-78-70).
"Henry had a very solid week as low man for the team again, and Nick gave us a great final round today too," said Whitten. "We'll look for them to continue that."
In addition to Spring and Carlson, sophomore Charlie Pilon tied for 50th at 227 (76-78-73) and freshman Ben Dunne tied for 64th at 231 (80-78-73). Freshman Patrick Sullivan rounded out U-M's starting five, tying for 72nd at 233. Junior Brent Ito played as an individual and tied for 59th at 229 (76-73-80).
The Maize and Blue will spend a few weeks in Ann Arbor before heading back out for Texas A&M's Aggie Invitational on Saturday and Sunday, April 6-7, at the Traditions Club in Bryan, Texas. It will be the sixth straight year the Maize and Blue will play in A&M's event. Last year, U-M finished ninth (900) as former Wolverine Kyle Mueller led U-M by finishing fifth individually.
