ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- Freshman Natalie Wojcik was named the Women's Collegiate Gymnastics Association (WCGA) Northeast Regional Gymnast of the Year on Wednesday (April 10), becoming the 12th University of Michigan student-athlete to receive the honor.
Michigan has now had the regional gymnast of the year in three consecutive seasons, with Paige Zaziski winning the honor last year and Nicole Artz in 2017. Artz (2015 and 2017), Joanna Sampson (2013-14), Lindsey Bruck (2006 and 2008) and Elise Ray (2004 and 2005) all received the honor twice, while Calli Ryals (2002) and Kylee Botterman (2011) were also recipients.
Wojcik does become Michigan's first freshman to earn the honor and is one of two freshman recipients in the six regions along with Florida's Trinity Thomas in the Southeast.
This season Wojcik beat out teammate Olivia Karas for the top all-around National Qualifying Score in the Northeast with a 39.630. Karas had a 39.535. Wojcik also had the top NQS on vault (9.955) and balance beam (9.930) and was second to Karas on the uneven bars (9.910) and floor exercise (9.910).
Wojcik adds to her already impressive list of accolades in 2019. She is the Big Ten Freshman of the Year and a three-time WCGA regular-season first team All-American on vault, beam and the all-around. She was a Big Ten champion on both the floor and all-around and NCAA Regional champion on floor. A first team All-Big Ten selection, Wojcik tallied five Big Ten Gymnast of the Week and eight Big Ten Freshman of the Week honors.
She has led Michigan to the NCAA Championships as one of eight teams remaining after the Wolverines captured the Big Ten regular-season title and the Big Ten championship. Michigan will compete in the first of two NCAA semifinals on Friday, April 19, at noon CDT in Fort Worth, Texas.
