WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. -- Overnight rains and more expected weather forced the cancellation of the final round at Purdue's Boilermaker Invitational today (Sunday, April 14). Completing 36 holes yesterday, the University of Michigan men's golf team finished fifth with a 574 (-2) tally to close the regular-season schedule.
"We have really had a tough stretch with the weather, but that is college golf in the spring sometimes," said U-M head coach Chris Whitten. "The conditions were good and scoreable yesterday, but the course was wet and it just could not handle the additional rain overnight. Our guys played two solid rounds yesterday, and I especially liked that we had all six guys playing long stretches of holes very consistently."
After weather cancelled last weekend's Aggie Invitational, storms and more expected rains ended play for a second straight weekend for the Maize and Blue. Posting back-to-back 287s (-1) -- the fourth and fifth team sub-par rounds of the season -- Michigan tallied its second sub-par team total of the season with a 574 (-2) 36-hole total. It is the second top-five finish of the season.
Individually, sophomore Charlie Pilon (72-70) and freshman Patrick Sullivan (71-71) led U-M, tying for 18th with 142 (-2) totals. Senior Nick Carlson's 143 (72-71, -1) tally gave the Wolverines three among the top 25 as he tied for 22nd. Playing as an individual, fifth-year senior Ian Martin (72-71) also tied for 22nd.
"Charlie and Nick are almost always near the top of our lineup, and we need that good play from them," added Whitten. "I was especially happy to see Patrick turn in two under-par rounds. He had a really tough injury in January and has worked hard to come back and help the team as quickly as possible. He looked fantastic out there."
In all, the Wolverines posted five sub-par and four rounds of par out of the 12 possible in the final regular-season event.
"The next step is getting one or two low guys per round that can push us to the next level," Whitten closed. "To me, that is all about momentum and confidence, and this tournament was a good step toward that for the Big Ten in two weeks."
U-M now turns its focus to the postseason as the Wolverines prep for the Big Ten Championships, scheduled for Friday through Sunday, April 26-28, at the Philadelphia Cricket Club in Flourtown, Pennsylvania.
