COLUMBUS, Ohio -- Led by freshman Ashley Lau's first career top-10 finish, the University of Michigan women's golf team battled the elements and closed with a 305 team total to finish fifth with an 896 total Sunday (April 14) at the Lady Buckeye Invitational at Ohio State's Scarlet Course.
"As a team, we were nine back going into the final round, and it was really nice to be in contention again," said U-M head coach Jan Dowling. "Our final round was not up to our standard, but we still gained confidence in our games. We have a few quick days at home before heading into the Big Ten Championship, and will take the positives and work our tails off to get ready."
Opening Saturday's (April 13) 36-hole day, the Wolverines started with a 297 total led by a 71 (-1) from sophomore Ashley Kim. U-M would use an even-par 72 from Lau in the second round to tally a 294 total to position itself tied for third, along with host Ohio State, after the first day.
With overnight rains falling on the Scarlet Course, the 12-team field returned Sunday morning and found a window to get the final 18 holes in. Led by a 75 from senior Elodie Van Dievoet on the final day, the Maize and Blue closed with a 305 team score to post a fifth-place finish with an 896 total -- the second top-five finish of the season.
Leading the Wolverines for the third straight event, Lau (74-72-76) guided the Wolverines in the regular-season finale tied for ninth with a 222 total. With a 224 total, Kim (71-75-78) tied for 13th and Van Dievoet's tie for 19th at 226 (78-73-75), the Wolverines placed three among the top 20 for the first time in two years -- the 2017 Hurricane Invitational (Feb. 27-March 1).
"Ashley (Lau) had a great round going in some tough conditions this morning, and really had another solid tournament," added Dowling. "I know she's disappointed with how she finished, but she's so close and gaining comfort at the top of the leaderboard. It's only a matter of time before she comes out on top at a collegiate event."
