FORT WORTH, Texas -- Four University of Michigan women's gymnasts earned a combined eight WCGA All-America honors for their performances during the NCAA Championships semifinals on Friday (April 19).
In order to be named an All-American, a gymnast must finish in the top eight in an event in her respective NCAA semifinal. The top four earn first team honors and places 5-8 receive second-team recognition.
Freshman Natalie Wojcik was a first team All-American on balance beam as she won the ninth NCAA title in program history with her NCAA Championships program-best score of 9.950. She is only the second beam champion at Michigan, joining Elise Ray, who won her sophomore year in 2002 with a 9.925. Wojcik and Ray also are the only two freshmen to win a national title at Michigan, and Wojcik joined Auburn's Derrian Gobourne (vault) as the only two freshmen to win a national championship in 2019.
Wojcik also tied senior Olivia Karas in the all-around with a 39.5375 to earn second team All-America honors with a tie for fifth place in the first session.
Karas tallied four All-America honors in all to give her six in her career. She was a first team All-American on the uneven bars (tie-4th, 9.900) and floor exercise (tie-4th, 9.925) and second team on beam (tie-5th, 9.875) and in the all-around. She is the first U-M gymnast since Katie Zurales in 2013 to earn four All-America honors in one season.
U-M had a spectacular beam rotation with four individuals receiving All-America status on the event. Juniors Lexi Funk and Maddy Osman earned their first career All-America accolades, tying for eighth on the event in the first semifinal with a 9.850 for second-team nods.
The 2014 season was the last time Michigan had four student-athletes garner All-America recognition.
