ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The University of Michigan baseball team moved into sole possession of first place in the Big Ten Conference standings with a 10-1 victory over Rutgers on Saturday (April 27) at the Wilpon Complex, home of Ray Fisher Stadium.
Michigan (30-11, 10-3 Big Ten) scored 10 unanswered runs in the game to reach the 30-win plateau for a sixth consecutive season under head coach Erik Bakich.
Rutgers opened the scoring in the third inning on a leadoff single, sacrifice bunt and two-out single to center field.
Michigan took the lead in the bottom of the frame. A fielding error eventually led to a runner at third base for junior center fielder Jordan Brewer with one out. The Rutgers infield crept-in to play halfway but it did not matter as Brewer crushed the first pitch he saw 404 feet over the left field line for his team-leading 11th home run and second in as many games. The blast sparked a four-run inning, which was capped by an RBI single from senior second baseman Ako Thomas.
Michigan broke the game open in the sixth when the Wolverines forced Rutgers twice to the bullpen. Sophomore left fielder Jordan Nwogu singled home a run, sophomore designated hitter Jesse Franklin lofted a long sacrifice fly to left and Brewer laced an RBI single to left field to give the home team a 7-1 lead.
Michigan continued the scoring in the seventh as sophomore catcher Joe Donovan launched a three-run homer to left for a 10-1 lead.
Junior left-hander Tommy Henry earned his seventh win of the season (7-3), allowing one earned run on five hits while striking out five Scarlet Knights in six innings of work. Three U-M relievers combined to throw three innings of one-hit baseball.
Michigan and Rutgers will close out their three-game series on Sunday (April 28) with a noon game at the Wilpon Complex.
