Gentry Selected in Fifth Round During Final Day of 2019 NFL Draft

NASHVILLE, Tenn. -- University of Michigan tight end Zach Gentry was drafted during the third and final day of the 2019 NFL Draft on Saturday (April 27), earning selection by the Pittsburgh Steelers in the fifth round. Gentry joined four defensive teammates with their selection by NFL franchises during the 84th annual selection meeting.
He was the 141st overall selection of the draft by the Steelers, the third pick at the top of the fifth round. Gentry is the third Michigan tight end drafted by the Steelers, joining Craig Dunaway (8th round, 1983) and Jerame Tuman (5th round, 1999).

Gentry used his big frame to stretch the field in Michigan's offense, averaging more than 16 yards per reception, including 17 career catches that netted more than 20 yards.
An All-Big Ten third team selection, Gentry started all 13 games at tight end in 2018. He hauled in a career-best 32 passes for 514 yards (15.8 avg.) and scored two touchdowns. Gentry tied for the team lead with 10 receptions for better than 20 yards and 23 of his 32 receptions went for first downs or touchdowns. He was Michigan's Big Ten Sportsmanship Award recipient and was a John Mackey Award candidate.
Gentry was a three-year letterman who appeared in 33 career games with 24 starting assignments at tight end. He collected 49 receptions for 817 yards (16.7 avg.) and scored four touchdowns during his career. Gentry switched to tight end from quarterback prior to his sophomore season.
The remaining members of the Michigan football senior class are eligible to sign free agent contracts with NFL teams.
