FLOURTOWN, Pa. -- With strong play from senior Nick Carlson and sophomores Charlie Pilon and Henry Spring, the University of Michigan men's golf team posted a 296 second-round team total Saturday (April 27) to vault eight positions into a tie for fourth place with a 595 36-hole at the Big Ten Championships at the Philadelphia Cricket Club's Wissahickon Course. The Wolverines were the only team to finish below 300 on the day.
"The guys probably had their best round of the year today, and it came at a great time," said U-M head coach Chris Whitten. "I think the pressure was off because we were out of position from the first day and the guys played loose. The wind was blowing so hard that some balls didn't want to stay on the greens. We just accepted it was going to be a total grind and showed a lot of grit."
After opening with a 299 in yesterday's rain-delayed first round, the Wolverines found themselves 12th after the first 18 holes. Playing in the final grouping of day two, the Wolverines could see elevated scoring across the leaderboard.
That did not stop the Maize and Blue, as the Wolverines combined for a second straight 72 (+2) from Pilon and a 73 from Spring and a 74 from Carlson to become the only team to crack the 300 mark with a 296 -- the best of the day by seven strokes.
With the second-round tally, the Wolverines vaulted up the leaderboard into a tie for fourth place with a 595 total. U-M is tied with Michigan State (291-304) in the fourth position. The Wolverines will play the final 18 holes with the Spartans and Nebraska, starting off the first tee at 8:40 a.m.
Michigan has two individuals among the top 10, as Pilon is tied for fifth with a 144 (72-72) tally, while Carlson is tied for seventh at 145 (71-74). With his second-round 73, Spring moved up 31 spots and is tied for 24th at 151 (78-73). Fifth-year senior Ian Martin rebounded from an opening 81 with a 77 Saturday.
With freshman Patrick Sullivan ill and unable to play, the Wolverines were able to use a new NCAA policy allowing substitutions in championships which gave freshman Ben Dunne the start in second round. He finished with a 78 in his first conference championship.
"Charlie (Pilon) has been incredibly steady, and Nick (Carlson) has found a few good feelings with his game that have his confidence going," added Whitten. "Henry (Spring) was really clutch with a few late birdies on hard holes today, too. We'll play free with nothing to lose tomorrow. It will be fun to see what we can do."
