COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. -- Naz Hillmon of the University of Michigan women's basketball team was one of 12 athletes to be named to the USA Basketball U19 World Cup Team on Sunday (May 19) following a three-day tryout at the United States Olympic Training Center. The 2019 FIBA U19 World Cup will be held July 20-28 in Bangkok, Thailand, where the USA will attempt to capture an eighth gold medal.
It is the second straight summer that Hillmon will wear the red, white and blue after earning a spot on last year's U18 FIBA Americas team that captured gold. For the tournament, Hillmon was third on the team in scoring after going for 10.3 points per game on 67-percent shooting from the floor. She also averaged 5.7 rebounds in 18.2 minutes per game.
In the gold medal game, Hillmon came off the bench to record 10 points and six rebounds in 21 minutes of action. She collected four double-figure scoring games during the six-game tournament.
Hillmon put together a stellar first season in Ann Arbor, as she was named the Big Ten Freshman of the Year by the media, the Sixth Player of the Year and became the first freshman in school history to earn All-Big Ten first-team honors. Hillmon also grabbed a spot on the Big Ten All-Freshman team after being named the Big Ten Freshman of the Week six times. She led Michigan in scoring (13.1 ppg) and rebounding (7.0 rpg) despite coming off the bench in all 34 games. She scored in double figures 20 times, racking up eight double-doubles on the season.
The U.S. team will return to Colorado Springs to train July 5-10 before traveling to Tokyo, Japan, where the squad will practice and scrimmage against the Japan U19 National Team July 13-15. The USA has an additional three days of training and a pair of scrimmages in Bangkok against Argentina and Germany, July 17-19, before the 13th edition of the FIBA U19 World Cup tips off July 20.
