ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- University of Michigan women's gymnast Emma McLean and wrestler Stevan Micic were announced as recipients of the Big Ten Outstanding Sportsmanship Award on Wednesday (June 5).
McLean and Micic were chosen from Michigan's 29 Big Ten Sportsmanship Award recipients to represent the Block "M" as individuals who distinguished themselves through sportsmanship and ethical behavior.
McLean, a movement science major, received the Big Ten Sportsmanship Award this season for the second time in her career and becomes the first from the women's gymnastics program to garner the Big Ten Outstanding Sportsmanship Award.
A two-time captain for the women's gymnastics team, McLean this past season guided her team to the NCAA Semifinals and a No. 5 final ranking. She was an All-Big Ten first team selection and the Big Ten vault champion, but her impact was felt far beyond her athletic achievements. With her leadership, the team showed support for Oklahoma women's gymnastics after the death of its athletic trainer's husband. After suffering an injury during the last practice before the NCAA Championships, McLean showed love and support for her teammates during what would have been her final collegiate meet. She handled every situation with a mature, thoughtful approach and was the bond that held the team together in 2019. Interested in a career in naturopathy, McLean is a two-time Academic All-Big Ten selection.
Micic, who earned a bachelor's degree in sociology this spring, joins previous U-M wrestlers Pat Owen (2004) and Adam Coon (2016) as recipients of the Big Ten Outstanding Sportsmanship Award.
Micic earned his third straight NCAA All-America citation at 133 pounds after finishing third at the NCAA Championships. He posted a 19-1 record, including a perfect 13-0 mark in dual meets, and earned bonus points in 12 of his 19 wins. Micic overcame multiple injuries over the course of the season, including one that forced him to default out of the Big Ten Championships, and handled every obstacle with class and dignity. A three-time academic All-Big Ten selection, he is a strong student and good representative of the program and the university. He will pursue a master's degree in sport management while completing his final collegiate season next year.
