ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- University of Michigan women's gymnastics head coach Bev Plocki announced the addition of Maile'ana Kanewa-Hermelyn as assistant coach on Monday (July 1).
"We are thrilled to announce the hiring of Maile'ana," said Plocki. "She was a great addition to our staff last season, first as a volunteer assistant and then as an assistant coach midway through the season. Her contributions were a valuable part of our amazing season and we couldn't be happier to be moving forward with her in the role full time."
In her first season, the Wolverines advanced to the NCAA Semifinals in the first year of the new postseason format and finished No. 5 in the national rankings. The season included freshman Natalie Wojcik winning the NCAA balance beam national title and four individuals combining for eight All-America honors.
Michigan won both the Big Ten regular-season title and the Big Ten Championship. It was the sixth straight Big Ten title for the Wolverines. Three individuals combined for four Big Ten individual titles as Wojcik was named the Big Ten Freshman of the Year and Women's Collegiate Gymnastics Association (WCGA) Northeast Regional Gymnast of the Year.
