ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- University of Michigan ice hockey alum Brian Wiseman stepped down as Wolverine assistant coach after he accepted the same position with the Edmonton Oilers, the club announced Tuesday (July 23).
"I want to congratulate Coach Wiseman on his opportunity at the next level," said head coach Mel Pearson. "I also would like to thank him for the incredible job he has done at Michigan. We want to wish Brian and his family all the best as they begin their new journey."
In seven seasons at his alma mater, Michigan compiled a 155-118-29 record and Wiseman helped lead the Wolverines to three NCAA Tournament appearances (2011, 2016, 2018), one Big Ten Tournament title (2016) and an NCAA Frozen Four appearance (2018).
Wiseman helped coach and recruit 36 Wolverines selected in the NHL Entry Draft, including eight first-round selections: Jacob Trouba (2012, No. 9 by Winnipeg Jets), Dylan Larkin (2014, No. 15 by Detroit Red Wings), Zach Werenski (2015, No. 8 by Columbus Blue Jackets), Kyle Connor (2015, No. 17 by Winnipeg Jets), Josh Norris (2017, No. 19 by San Jose Sharks), Quinn Hughes (2018, No. 7 by Vancouver Canucks), Cam York (2019, No. 14 by Philadelphia Flyers) and Johnny Beecher (2019, No. 30 by Boston Bruins).
As a player, Wiseman appeared in 166 career games for the Maize and Blue, racking up 249 points, which rank third all-time for the program. His 164 assists are second best in U-M annals. As a senior captain in 1993-94 he led U-M in scoring with 69 points (19 goals, 50 assists), earned All-America first team honors and was voted a Hobey Baker Award finalist. Wiseman is one of only seven U-M players to notch 50 assists in a single season. He began his career with the CCHA Rookie of the Year award in 1990-91 when he tallied a 25-33-58 line, the second-highest point total by any Wolverine freshman.
Wiseman was a member of U-M's first CCHA regular-season championship team (1991-92) and its first CCHA Tournament winner (1994). He won a second CCHA regular-season crown in 1993-94.
Wiseman's four seasons at Michigan started the school's streak of 21 consecutive NCAA Tournament berths, a national record. His teams reached the Frozen Four in 1992 and '93.
A selection of the New York Rangers in the 1991 NHL Entry Draft (12th round, 257th overall), Wiseman appeared in three NHL games, all with the Toronto Maple Leafs in 1996-97 and played six seasons between the International Hockey League and the American Hockey League. In 446 career minor league games he totaled 515 points on 145 goals and 370 assists. In 1998-99 he was the IHL's leading scorer and most valuable player while leading the AHL's Houston Aeros to the Turner Cup. He also captained the Aeros in 1999-2000.
Wiseman previously served as an assistant coach with the Aeros (2010-11) and was an assistant coach at Princeton University during the 2003-04 campaign. Wiseman also was a video coach for the Dallas Stars in 2002-03 and served as the Michigan ice hockey team's administrative assistant in 2000-01 and '01-02.
