NEW YORK, N.Y. -- University of Michigan baseball assistant coach Nick Schnabel was named the National Assistant Coach of the Year by the American Baseball Coaches Association (ABCA), the organization announced Wednesday (Aug. 14).
Schnabel serves as the Wolverines' hitting and infield coach, and also leads the program's recruiting efforts. In his seventh season with the Michigan program, he helped guide the Wolverines to the eighth College World Series appearance in team history, which resulted in its third CWS Finals appearance and ended in a national runner-up finish.
Highlighted by a Super Regional victory at No. 1 seed UCLA in Los Angeles, California, and a 3-0 start in the College World Series to advance to the finals, Michigan finished with a 50-22 overall record -- the most wins by a Michigan team since 1987 -- and a 16-7 Big Ten record.
Eight Wolverines earned All-Big Ten Conference honors during the 2019 campaign, including junior outfielder Jordan Brewer, who led the Wolverine hitters and was named Big Ten Player of the Year.
Michigan's 2018 incoming class was perhaps the most highly-touted class in program history, as the group of 15 newcomers was ranked No. 10 by both Baseball America and Collegiate Baseball Newspaper. The ranking marked the highest a Big Ten class has ever earned and played an important role in the team's success in 2019, as five of Michigan's nine-man starting lineup were second-year players.
