ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The University of Michigan volleyball team started its season with a three-set victory (25-18, 25-23, 25-8) over Oakland to start the Michigan Invitational on Friday (Aug. 30) at Cliff Keen Arena.
The Wolverines (1-0) won the first point of the opening set and never trailed to win the first set, 25-18. Michigan led Oakland (0-1) by as many as nine points at 24-15 before finishing off the set, collecting 16 kills while only registering two attack errors.
Michigan ended a contentious second set with a 25-23 victory on the strength of 15 kills. The Wolverines broke open a tie at 7 in the third set with a decisive 18-1 run to win going away.
May Pertofsky finished with nine kills on the day to lead the Wolverines attack with a with a .538 hitting percentage.
Michigan got six digs from Natalie Smith along with five blocks from Pertofsky and five rejections from Cori Crocker to lead the team defensively.
Michigan (1-0) will return to action tonight at 7:30 p.m. when the Wolverines battle Northern Arizona in their second match of the day. The first 500 fans in attendance will receive a U-M Mini LED Fan.
