ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- Behind first goals from underclassmen, the University of Michigan women's soccer team earned a 2-0 shutout victory over Florida Gulf Coast on Friday night (Aug. 30) at U-M Soccer Stadium.
The Wolverines improve to 3-0-0 overall and it the second straight season in which it has started the year 3-0-0. U-M has not allowed a team to take more than five shots in a match this season.
Freshman Hannah Blake recorded her first collegiate goal to bring her point total to three, while sophomore Meredith Haakenson netted her third goal of the season. Sophomore Raleigh Loughman added her fifth point with her first assist on Blake's goal.
Michigan outshot FGCU, 9-5, and put six of its shots on goal, while goalkeeper Hillary Beall made just one save in the victory.
A corner kick led to the Wolverines' first goal when Loughman sent the ball into the box onto the head of Blake, who headed the ball down into the bottom of the net to put Michigan up 1-0 in the 24th minute.
With less than four minutes remaining in the first half, U-M capitalized on a free kick to extend its lead to 2-0. An attempt to punch the ball out of box by the Eagle keeper failed and Haakenson headed the ball into the bottom-left corner give the Wolverines a two-goal cushion.
The Wolverines will be tested on the road for the first time when they travel to Milwaukee, Wisconsin, for a Sunday (Sept. 1) showdown against Marquette. First touch is slated for 2:30 p.m. CDT.
