PALO ALTO, Calif. -- Eleven current, former and future members of the University of Michigan women's swimming and diving team ended the summer season at the Phillips 66 National Championships, held at Stanford's Avery Aquatic Center last week (July 31-Aug. 4).
The highlights from the five-day meet include:
• Junior Sierra Schmidt had a fantastic weekend, winning three medals and setting three program records in the distance events. She won silver in the 800-meter freestyle (8:27.13) and picked up bronze medals in both the 400-meter freestyle (4:07.79) and 1,500-meter freestyle (16:10.12).
• Senior Miranda Tucker made two event finals, including a bronze-medal swim in the 100-meter breaststroke (1:07.33), lowering her previously-held school record. She also was fourth in the 200-meter breaststroke (2:26.50).
• Senior Chloe Hicks only swam one day, but she made it count. She pulled a double and got second swims in both events, finishing sixth in the 200-meter backstroke (2:11.93) and 11th in the 200-meter freestyle (1:59.61). Both times met the 2020 U.S. Olympic Trials standard.
• Fresh off international duty for Team USA, a pair of alums -- sisters Gabby DeLoof (2015-18) and Catie DeLoof (2016-19) were in action. Catie, who now trains with Team Elite in San Diego, had three second swims, including finals swims in both the 100-meter freestyle (fourth, 54.28) and 50-meter freestyle (sixth, 25.11). Gabby was fifth in the 200-meter freestyle (1:59.03).
• Incoming freshman Kaitlynn Sims also qualified for the meet. She swam three events, finishing as high as 24th in the 800-meter freestyle (8:42.19).
