PULLMAN, Wash. -- The University of Michigan women's soccer team scored two first-half goals over the first four minutes of the match and goalkeeper Hillary Beall made a career-best 12 saves to help the Wolverines defeat No. 13-ranked Washington State, 2-1, Friday night (Sept. 13) at Lower Field.
"I am so happy for our team tonight," said head coach Jennifer Klein. "It was a great result versus a very dangerous and tough team. Our team came out with energy and fought all the way to the end. It was a great end to our non-conference games and we are excited to start Big Ten play next week."
The Washington State loss marked the end of its nation-leading 11-game non-conference unbeaten streak.
Junior Sarah Stratigakis put Michigan on the board in the first two minutes before sophomore Meredith Haakenson scored the eventual the game-winner less than two minutes later to give the Wolverines a two-goal lead.
Sophomore Raleigh Loughman earned the assist on the Stratigakis goal and junior Nicki Hernandez as well as Stratigakis assisted on Haakenson's tally.
The player of the night for Michigan was Beall, who made two big saves over the final 10 minutes of the match to hold off the Cougars as part of her career night.
Washington State outshot Michigan, 23-12, and put 13 shots on net, while U-M took four shots on goal.
The Cougars were the first to threaten when they fired off two shots in the opening minutes, but Stratigakis drew the keeper out of the net and popped a shot over her head from 18 yards out to put the Wolverines up, 1-0.
U-M immediately won the ball back off the kickoff and brought it back into its attacking third. After the ball bounced around the 18-yard box, Stratigakis passed it up to Hernandez on the left side of the field. Hernendez took two touches before she crossed it to Haakenson, who faked left to juke the goalkeeper and put the ball into the middle of the net with her right foot to extend the Michigan lead to 2-0.
Washington State outshot Michigan, 12-8, in the first half and Beall made five saves to keep the Cougars scoreless at the halftime break.
WSU continued to threaten early in the second half before they solved Beall in the 71st minute to come within one of the Wolverines at 2-1.
Michigan will open Big Ten play Thursday (Sept. 19) when it takes on Penn State in State College. The match is scheduled to start at 6 p.m. and will be broadcast live on Big Ten Network.
