ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The No. 9-ranked University of Michigan field hockey team earned its fourth straight win -- and second straight shutout -- with a 4-0 decision against Kent State on Sunday (Sept. 22) at Phyllis Ocker Field. It was the Wolverines' third shutout win of the season.
After a scoreless first period, Michigan took advantage of penalty-corner opportunities to break through in the second. Junior Kayla Reed scored twice -- in identical fashion -- with a redirection from the right post. Junior Halle O'Neill earned assists on both goals, coming at 16:41 and 22:31, with the strike at the top of the circle, and Reed laid out to get her stick on the ball and tipped it into the Kent State cage. She has four goals on the season.
The Wolverines doubled up with two more goals in the fourth quarter as the Argentinians, junior Sofia Southam and senior Guadalupe Fernandez Lacort, tallied their first markers of the season. Southam used her stick skills to bounce a shot past KSU goalkeeper Mary Crumlish at the 45:23 mark. She first juggled a shot high, forcing Crumlish to bat it down, then swatted the rebound down and in for the goal. Fernandez Lacort struck six minutes later, at 51:12, carrying the ball to the right side of the circle and hammering a shot through the middle to the lower left corner.
Michigan outshot the Golden Flashes, 23-3, and outcornered them, 7-1. Sophomore goalkeeper Anna Spieker earned two saves -- both in the first half -- and for the second game in a row, shared the shutout with junior Sidonie LaPlante. Kent State's Crumlish earned 10 saves, while a KSU back added defensive save in the third quarter.
The Wolverines (5-2) will kick off Big Ten Conference play on the road next weekend, when they travel to Bloomington, Indiana, for a 3 p.m. slate at Indiana on Friday (Sept. 27) before they take on Northwestern at noon CT Sunday (Sept. 29) in Evanston, Illinois. Both games will be streamed live on BTN Plus.
