TOLEDO, Ohio -- The University of Michigan men's golf team finished ninth at Toledo's Inverness Intercollegiate on Tuesday (Sept. 24) after it tallied a two-day, 54-hole total of 883 at Inverness Club. The Wolverines were paced by a second straight top-12 individual finish from senior Brent Ito and a final-round, career-low-tying 69 (-2) from junior Henry Spring.
After opening team tallies of 298 and 297 on Monday, the Wolverines rallied in the final round and dropped nine shots from the second round to post a 288 (+4) final-round total. With Ito and Spring birdieing three of their final six holes, the duo guided the Wolverines to the second lowest team total of the fall posting rounds of 71 (E) and 69 (-2), respectively. With an 883 54-hole total, U-M closed with a ninth place finish.
"We had some positives to build on from this week, but our mental mistakes cost us again," said U-M head coach Zach Barlow. "In order be successful we cannot have big numbers hurt us like they have been. We have to clean up how we approach each shot and each situation. That will come.
"I liked the way we finished the round today. Our four counting scorers played the final six holes three under par which was our emphasis coming to this event. We need to make sure we close out rounds. Now, we just have to adjust and to try and start with a little more sense of urgency. A ninth-place finish is not what we strive for, but we will get back to work and make sure that doesn't become a pattern."
For the second straight event, Ito led U-M with his second straight top-12 individual finish. After he started the season with a career-best tie for ninth (Windon Memorial), he tied for 11th this week with a 216 tally. He opened with a 74, and followed with back-to-back 71s which helped him post four of his first six fall rounds at or below par.
Tallying rounds of 76 and 75 to start the event, Spring rallied in the final round to tie his career low with a 69 (-2). With birdies on two of his first three holes, he got off to a strong start before three bogeys drew him even after he made the turn on the 10th. With three additional birdies over the final six holes, Spring came back to post his first sub-par fall score and equal his career best for the third time.
Sophomore Ben Dunne tied his career low with a 72 in the opening round to round out U-M's top three finishers as he tied for 35th at 222 (72-74-76). Junior Charlie Pilon tied for 46th at 224 (76-77-72) and sophomore Patrick Sullivan tied for 79th at 236 (77-81-78). Freshman Kevin Healy competed as an individual for a second straight event and tied for 71st (233).
The Wolverines will hit the midway point of their fall season when they travel to South Bend, Indiana, to play in Notre Dame's Fighting Irish Classic, Oct. 7-8, at the Warren Golf Course.
Last year, U-M posted an eighth place finish with an 845 (-7) team tally, highlighted by Ito's tie for 15th (207, -6) as he fired his career-low 64 (-7) -- tying the second lowest round in program history -- in the final round.
