ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- University of Michigan ice hockey freshman forward Brendan Brisson was selected by the Vegas Golden Knights with the 29th overall pick in the 2020 NHL Draft on Tuesday night (Oct. 6).
Brisson is the 165th Michigan Wolverine to be drafted in the NHL. Michigan leads all NCAA teams in first-round draft picks, with Brisson being the 25th. His selection Tuesday marked the 25th consecutive year U-M has had a player chosen in the draft.
"I'm really excited for Brendan," Graham Family Head Men's Ice Hockey Coach Mel Pearson said. "Our staff is looking forward to his career here at Michigan. We anticipate helping him continue his growth as a player, as he looks to fulfill his dream of one day playing in the National Hockey League."
The 2019-20 United States Hockey League (USHL) Rookie of the Year, Brisson finished his rookie campaign second in the league in scoring as a member of the Chicago Steel. He totaled 59 points (24 goals, 35 assists) in 45 games as a first team All-USHL selection. Brisson tallied 18 multiple-point games en route to capturing all-rookie honors as the Steel won both the Anderson Cup and Frost Cup this past season.
A member of Team USA at the World Junior A Challenge, Brisson was named to the all-tournament team. He scored five goals and seven assists in six games as Team USA captured the bronze medal.
Making the fitting announcement of Brisson's selection was Golden Knights general manager Kelly McCrimmon, who played four years at Michigan and was team captain his senior year in 1983-84.
Michigan also completed the feat of having at least one player drafted by all 31 eligible NHL organizations.
Rounds 2-7 of the NHL Draft will be conducted Wednesday (Oct. 7) at 11:30 a.m. and will be broadcast live on NHL Network.
